Hey x
I've been quiet for a while, this last 6 months or so I've just not really been in a mentally good place. I don't know if it's the time of year or something else, but as much as I felt like I needed time for 'me', I just couldn't muster the effort needed to engage with this side of my life in any way, at least until recently anyway.
For my first post of 2026 I was going to write about a few nights out I've been on since my last post, something light and fun, but instead I think I need to write about something that's really been bothering me lately. AI and digital privacy. At this stage I'm finding myself more and more angrily politicised but equally I feel completely powerless to do anything about what is going on.
I feel like a conspiracy theorist sometimes when I write about this in other places, but I'm really really worried about where we're heading, and what that means for those of us who are in a minority group or want to do something about what's going on.
I can't stand AI, I'm ethically opposed to it and I hate it with a passion. It's data centres destroys communities, it's stealing from artists seemingly without any repurcussions, and it's taking jobs. I completely fail to understand how the CEO's and their companies can have such a lack of humanity or care for the consequence of their actions as their products are wreaking havoc on society, it's insane to me.
And then we have the attack on digital privacy worldwide. The online safety act and age verification system does nothing but mean companies will know exactly who is doing what at all times online, and use that data against us. While also making us less safe by creating ID databases which will be a prime target for hackers. And then the governments plans to be able to scan phones... It will start with nudes but at some point will start be used against protesters, minorities that are the victim of moral panics, or whoever our eventual next far right government wants to scapegoat.
Add this to the facial recognition cameras being rolled out by the police without privacy safeguards and our governments trend of locking up protesters for years...
We are on the cusp of fascist governments rising around the world but this time they will have the tools to find, track and lock up whoever they choose for whatever they decide to criminalise at that moment. The technology we have will imprison us in our own homes. I am honestly scared about where we're headed and feel powerless to do anything about it.
I certainly won't be providing ID to these companies so in the next few months I'm expecting to lose access to all my social media accounts, or to be able to use it meaningfully. I'm thinking I might have to delete this blog and close my Google accounts to stop them being fed into whatever AI training nonsense they've decided they can use my data for. I'm also thinking i'll need to install Graphene on my phone but will that cause problems later on down the line, I read one age verification company is sending details to the police when it finds phones that use this, would other companies/services do the same?
I feel like if I don't submit I'm going to end up as some kind of digital pariah, cut off from the world because I don't want the government in my pocket, or to be used to train the AI models that are fucking us over.
Is this worrying anyone else? Have you thought about what you're going to do? Or have I got this all wrong and am I overreacting?
Hi Chloe,
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you again and sorry to learn that things have not been easy for you. FWIW, I'm only an email away if you need a chat. Happy to listen 🫂
The technology situation and certain Big Tech people cosying up to authoritarians is deeply concerning, yes. There are flaws in their approach, so it's not a done deal yet.
The Electronic Freedom Foundation are US based, although they have a number of articles and advice around preserving your privacy.

Also FOSS who run many articles around using technology safely and keeping your data yours. See Signal or Session for encrypted messaging that's easy to use. The former we moved to as a family, including my folks who are in their 80s.
I think FOSS cover e/os and other secure Android systems which may make for interesting reading.
Talking of reading, "Careless People" by Sarah Wynn-Williams is about her time spent working for Facebook. See also Cory Doctorow's work - blogs and books. He has written about the upcoming AI collapse and that might give you a bit of hope for the future. There's a lot of companies chasing that 'new oil'.
Stay safe,
L x
Hiya Lynn! x
DeleteThat's a very kind offer, thank you. I'm ok, I think I just needed some space. I think the time of year doesn't help either, dark, dreary, summer plans a great distance away... :)
Thanks for the links and suggestions, I think I need to read up. I'm definitely considering paying a few £ a month for Proton, just so I can get my emails and shared files away from Google. I've heard Signal might be pulling out of the UK is the government keeps on with its Digital ID plans so I'm not sure if you would still get to use it if we go down that path.
I have read about the AI bubble and it will all come crashing down at some point, but the longer it goes on the more 'normal' financial instructions get tied up in it, which means we will suffer when it goes too.
Age verification is also a massive worry for me, it's Digital ID by the back door. I'm not up to anything dodgy online, but I don't want to give these companies even more power to manipulate us, or connect things I don't want connected.
Honestly, this last year or two it just feels like things have suddenly shifted gears and I'm very worried.
Thank you for the advice though, i'll read up, maybe they'll calm my nerves lol.

Hi, it's nice to see you post again. I'm sorry you've not been in a good place recently. The trans community is often a good place to reach out to, I find.
ReplyDeleteI think we're all depressed these days for all the reasons you mentioned. I detest AI precisely for its damage to human creativity and individuality. But I wonder if it's a bit like the dotcom bubble at the turn of the century that won't actually lead to anything permanent. AI's poor quality is commented on by very many users.

Hi Sue! x
DeleteThank you x I sometimes have 'low moments' I guess and get lost in the drudgery of day to day living. I'm ok now though. :)
Yes AI is extremely damaging, trained of stolen art, music and materials, and it can only produce derivatives of that work but in the meantime, is stealing jobs from people and destroying communities. It will come crashing down at some point but there is so much money tied up in it, it will probably be another financial crash like the housing markets was it 2008ish?
But it's like a perfect storm that we're suddenly dealing with that, and also age verification/Digital ID, governments wanting to track us all online and offline through our phones, and companies getting greedy and just starting to help themselves to our personal data, emails, messages, profiles, blogs, to feed their AI machines...
There's too much going on at the same time and I want to try and protect myself as much as I can. I don't want my data used for that purpose.
Hopefully my next post will be a little more light hearted lol.
